Just when you thought the world of sports was safe from a delusional, drug or alcohol induced, hyperventilatey attack from ol’ Beckerhead at FOX, you were wrong. On his radio show last week Glenny Boy said the following:
“I don’t get the baseball thing, but the soccer thing, I hate it so much — probably because the rest of the world likes it so much, and they riot over it, and they continually try to jam it down our throat… It doesn’t matter how you sell it to us. It doesn’t matter how many celebrities you get. It doesn’t matter how many bars open early. It doesn’t matter how many beer commercials they run. We don’t want the World Cup. We don’t like the World Cup. We don’t like soccer. We want nothing to do with it. You can package it any way — you can spend all kinds of money. You can force it on our television sets. We will not enjoy the World Cup.”
What a shock, the unrefined, uncultured mouthbreathers on the right don’t particularly care for the world’s most popular sport. And just like the Drugster Limbaugh, there’s that “jam it down our throats” comment again in Glenny Boy’s rant.
And really Becky, “they riot over it”? You of all people should be criticizing people for rioting, considering it is YOUR ‘team’ that has people who say things like “gather your (treasonous) armies” against the government and hijack town hall meetings to read corporate talking points. That would be like me posting a rant against people with hair that’s not the natural color. 😉
Sorry Glenny Boy, this is the WORLD Cup. You might think you’re the shit and all, but more people like soccer than you. I know that must be eating at you inside.

Actually the US has embraced soccer somewhat. As I look at the TV schedule for ESPN today I see World Cup Soccer on all day. If it were true that “nobody in the US likes soccer”, then why is the nation’s largest sports broadcaster spening so much time covering something nobody watches?

That’s a good question. If every other country in the world has embraced soccer, why hasn’t the U.S.?? WE are the “odd men out” in this case. WE are the ONLY ones who don’t care for soccer. Personally, I HATE football, but I don’t care who likes it or who watches it or bets on it, etc. I’m not badmouthing football like Beck was badmouthing soccer. I just don’t talk about it, because I have no interest in it. So why does Beck have to badmouth soccer?? My OPINION is that he does it to mock other countries, because he doesn’t like them. My OPINION is that he has the ‘mindset’ of isolationism and probably wishes we were the only country that matters on Earth. Just my OPINION.

Mr. Beck has (more or less) communicated the sentiment I have had about soccer for the last many years. I have learned that I am not alone in those viewa. Most of those I know feel the same way. It isn’t that we hate soccer but that the soccer world thinks there is something wrong with those of us who are not our rioting for our teams and being as obnoxious as we are possible. Oh, I have some family who like soccer and a coworker or two who also love the sport. We can talk about it and they can answer some questions like “why did they disqualify that goal?” or “If that player was the epitome of soccer, why was he disqualified for touching the ball with his hands twice?”
Why do you feel that Glenn Beck, and everyone who has a different view than your’s about soccer deserves to be marginalized with infantile name calling? Is that your best argument for soccer? Can you see that you make his point with your second grade playground bully antics?
Who really cares? It is just a game.

Number one, I’m pissed at Beck because he’s continuing the typical what I call “DUMB JOCK” mentality that soccer is somehow a “pussy” sport. Bullshit. It’s not soccer where the players are almost wearing space suits during the game. Plus with the amount of running, kicking, etc in soccer, soccer players are hardly “wimpy”.
Number two, I disagree with his “WE don’t like soccer” thing. FUCK YOU GLENN BECK!! I speak for myself. Just because he thinks he’s America’s voice, doesn’t mean he is. Not everyone hates soccer, just a few dumb ignorant jocks and right wing isolationist assholes. Considering that the network that broadcasts Monday Night Football is now almost exclusively covering soccer, people are out at sports bars watching it, people travel to see the games live; there’s a pretty damn good market for soccer in the United States. Also how quickly people in this area forget about the soccer game that was at the Browns stadium last month.
Number three, it’s just more bullshit right wing “american exceptionalism’. In other words America does everything “except” what the rest of the world does. Always gotta be different, in the bad, wrong way. The rest of the world has universal health care, not us! The rest of the world likes soccer, not us(according to Beck). The rest of the world uses the Metric system, not us!! We’re a bunch of uninsured football fans using the most fucked up system of measurement in existence. God bless America!!! LMMFAO!!

Agree with you both, I tried golf once in high school but I didn’t like it, although miniature golf is fun. I prefer sports in which you must outrun, outsmart or outmuscle your opponent. It amuses me how in golf, the spectators must remain totally silent, while the player hits a ball on a tee that is sitting perfectly still with a club that has a flat side designed to drive the small, rubberized ball – contrast that to baseball in which a player must gingerly stand in the batter’s box and try to mentally block out the shouts & taunts from the nearby crowd, so that he can attempt to hit a round ball with a round bat, when that ball could be travelling in triple digit miles per hour and can break his bones, or possibly even kill him if it strikes him in the head at the speed & force that any professional pitcher can generate behind that small, round & very hard “projectile”.
As for soccer, what kind of sport is it when a players’ greatest fear is simply being shown a colored card, or when an entire country can be fucked over by some Finance inspector from Mali (Koman Coulibaly) who while acting as a referee, totally disregards at least 3 US players being held or otherwise fouled but disallows a USA goal that would’ve won the game, without ever offering so much as an explanation as to who on our team he was calling for a foul, or what this player supposedly did.
If we get the 3 points for a victory vice the 1 for a tie, then we already qualify to advance the next round instead of needing to win our next game in order to do so. If Coulibaly had pulled this crap against a country that reveres soccer, then not only would he never be allowed to set foot on their soil again, he could actually be targeted for violence over it (it’s happened before) but if we beat Algeria this morning and advance, then all will be forgiven.

I tried golf in high school, too. Well, actually it was forced upon me in Gym class. It’s boring to watch & it’s boring to play.

I agree. Watching golf on TV has to be the most boring thing in the world. But in person, even though it’s a rich white man thing, I don’t have too many ‘ill feelings’ toward it. If I were playing by myself for fun, cool. But if it was a competition, not cool.
Ehh, I’m just not a fan of ‘competitive sports’. Even though I did play football back in the day, zzzzzzz. Like I said before I don’t need to “outjock” others and run around hitting other people(as GS said). Even though I am better than some of the people who made up the “football team”, whatever. Like I said, skateboarding is better. 😀

It’s strange how just about every subject comes down to race in your mind, but in case you haven’t noticed, arguably the best golfer on the planet is a multi-racial, brown skinned man, just like our President who currently plays enough golf to qualify for the PGA Tour.
In addition, athletes from just about all other sports like to “unwind” & “relax” on the golf course with friends & fellow players, and an awful lot of those players just happen to be Black…
