No other God.

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, {6} who gave himself as a ransom for all men–the testimony given in its proper time. (1 Tim 2:5-6 NIV)

“I, even I, am the LORD, and apart from me there is no savior. {12} I have revealed and saved and proclaimed– I, and not some foreign god among you. You are my witnesses,” declares the LORD, “that I am God. {13} Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?” (Isa 43:11-13 NIV)

God commanded Israel not to acknowledge other gods, since He was the Savior who rescued them from Egypt. It was regarded as high treason to devote any attention to an idol or false god.

God did not give the first commandment because there actually were other gods [(Exo 20:2-3 NIV)  “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. {3} “You shall have no other gods before me.] but because He wanted His people to understand that He was the ONLY God and there was no other. Period. There is a God who is and a god we want and the two are not the same.

In God’s redemptive plan to save humanity from their sin, He sent His Son as mediator of that plan, Christ Jesus. In sending His Son, God has made the statement that there really is only one valid method of salvation and all the rest are invalid. The Father alone determines the means by which He is reconciled to sinners.

Since God is the only God, He transcends all ethnic, national, and sociological barriers. The one God offers a universal promise that all who come to Him through the way, the truth, and life (Jesus) will be redeemed. We read in the book of Revelation how this looks; “After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. {10} And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” (Rev 7:9-10 NIV)

Every week I meet people who believe that there may be one God but there are many paths to Him and he is represented by many faces, and He approves of them all. Clearly these are people who do not read their bibles. Those who affirm “many ways of salvation” really affirm the existence of many gods with many standards, which is foolish given that no other gods exist. The one God has revealed in the one Mediator the one way of salvation, and only the fool would advocate redemption elsewhere. To advocate “many ways of salvation” is to deny God’s clear truth that He is the only God and there is no other. He is the only savior and there is no other. Jesus, His Son, it our only mediator, and there is no other.
